Old Richians RFC Club History

Old Richians RFC was founded in 1950 and is the old boys club of Sir Thomas Rich's Grammar School, Gloucester.

Situated in such a rugby hotbed of Gloucestershire, Old Richians has a large and growing senior set up. Most weekends see at least three Old Richians sides take to the field.

The 1st XV compete in the Gloucester premier league as well as regional and local knock out competitions. Since joining the League system in 1986, after first declining to enter Old Richians gaining seven promotions.

The 2nd and 3rd XV, play regular 'friendly' fixtures with sides throughout the county and beyond and with signs for a 2nd Team Merit table to be introduced more competitive rugby is available to add to the current cup competitions.

Back in the early days for many years the club was without a clubhouse and was run out of local pubs.

In the late 1970's a group of members, including the late Gerry Stone, banded together and leased a piece of land adjacent to the school.  The Clubhouse was then built and opened in December 1983.

The proximity to the school allowed the club to use the school pitches, but several years ago, through the Council the club now have acquired their own pitches.

Over the years Richians have developed a junior section the envy of many clubs, who have fixtures with major club sides throughout the U.K.  Amongst their scalps are Bristol, Bath and Newbridge. Our Under 15's, 17's & Colts have all been County Champions on many occasions.  In 1995, 5 junior players were placed under contract by Gloucester RFC and many of our juniors have made the Gloucester Academy Set Up.
